How to Prepare an Earthquake Emergency Kit
In the event of a major earthquake, emergency services may not be able to reach you immediately. Being prepared with an emergency supply kit (Go-Bag) is vital for your survival for at least the first 72 hours.
Essential Supplies Checklist
Your kit should be stored in a portable bag and kept in an easily accessible location. Here is what you need:
- Water: At least one gallon (approx. 3.7 liters) per person per day for at least three days.
- Food: A three-day supply of non-perishable food (canned meats, energy bars, dried fruits).
- First Aid Kit: Sterile bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any prescription medications you use.
- Tools & Safety: Flashlight, extra batteries, a whistle to signal for help, and a multi-purpose tool (Swiss Army knife).
- Communication: A battery-powered or hand-crank radio to receive emergency broadcasts.
- Personal Items: Sturdy shoes, a change of clothes, blankets, and personal hygiene items.
- Documents & Cash: Copies of IDs, insurance policies, and some cash in small bills (ATMs may not work).
Maintenance Tips
Preparing the kit is only the first step. To ensure it stays ready:
- Keep your kit in a cool, dry place.
- Replace expired food and water every six months.
- Check the batteries in your flashlight and radio regularly.
- Re-evaluate your needs every year as your family situation changes.
